Since the start of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine on February 20, 2022, there have been many casualties, including a significant number of Ukrainian athletes. The Sports Committee of Ukraine has stated that around 422 athletes have sadly died during this continuing crisis.
In order to pay tribute to and commemorate these deceased athletes, the Sports Committee of Ukraine has established a website named “Sports Angels.” This platform shares emotional tales about the experiences and sacrifices of these athletes. Their extraordinary paths and premature demises stand as a testament to the bravery and selflessness exhibited in challenging circumstances.
Several athletes are lost to conflict around the world.
The example of Sydoruk, a junior sergeant in the Ukrainian military, demonstrates strength and commitment. Even after being injured in the line of duty, he continued to pursue his passion for archery.
Sydoruk competed for Ukraine in the Invictus Games in Toronto and won a silver medal. Tragically, he was killed in action while serving with the 24th mechanized brigade in the Kherson region.
In the same way, Balanchuk, a skilled soccer player who competed for Dynamo Kyiv and Maccabi Haifa, sadly lost his life in conflict near Bakhmut in the Donetsk region. Haifa City paid tribute to him by naming a street after him, in recognition of his achievements.
A well-known marathon runner, Pronevych, paused his athletic career to join the territorial defense efforts against the Russian invasion in Ukraine. Sadly, tragedy befell him as he became a victim of the cruelty of Russian forces. Despite this, his extraordinary bravery and determination reflect the unwavering resilience of the Ukrainian people in challenging times.
Boiko, a retired American football player who lived in Ukraine, bravely defended the Donetsk region in the fight for freedom. Tragically, he passed away from injuries received in battle. The Ukrainian League of American Football (ULAF) paid tribute to his bravery, acknowledging him as a genuine hero whose memory will inspire generations to come.

An unforgettable legacy left behind
In Kyiv, Kotlyarova, a talented soccer player and futsal champion, along with her mother, sadly perished as a result of a Russian assault. The recent wedding of Kotlyarova sheds light on the heart-wrenching personal toll of war. Poliuliak, a snowboarding instructor, bravely chose to enlist in Ukraine’s military forces and met a tragic end while valiantly protecting Mariupol.
His colleague pays tribute to Poliuliak’s dedication and love for the mountains, expressing sorrow for a life cut short while protecting his country.
Yepifanov, a skilled fencer, bravely enlisted in the Ukrainian military at a young age and tragically perished in battle. His decision to pause his fencing career highlights the commitment of young Ukrainians to protect their country.
Bilokon, a well-known champion in powerlifting, bravely joined the Ukrainian Armed Forces and sadly lost his life in combat against Russian soldiers. His impressive achievements in sports serve as a representation of the Ukrainian people’s determination and endurance.
The impressive athletes who have made significant contributions have deeply affected Ukraine’s rich sporting history. Their presence and sacrifices are powerful reminders of the hardships caused by war.
