Shannen Doherty, known for her roles in Beverly Hills 90210 and Charmed, passed away at the age of 53 following a struggle with cancer.
“I am saddened to announce that actress Shannen Doherty has passed away. She bravely fought cancer for many years before ultimately succumbing to the disease on Saturday, July 13,” stated Doherty’s publicist Leslie Sloane in a statement to PEOPLE on Sunday.
Sloane mentioned that the beloved daughter, sister, aunt, and friend was with her family and dog, Bowie, during this difficult time. The family is requesting privacy to mourn in peace.
In 2015, the actress from Beverly Hills 90210 was initially diagnosed with breast cancer, which went into remission in 2017. However, she revealed in 2020 that the cancer had come back as Stage 4.
Doherty expressed that there are times when she questions why she is facing health issues, but then she realizes that no one else deserves to experience it either.

After the death of Shannen Doherty’s on-screen love interest Luke Perry in 2019, who portrayed the rebellious teen Dylan McKay, this is the show’s second significant loss in the cast. Perry passed away at the age of 52 due to several strokes.
Actress Shannen Doherty has sadly passed away after a long battle with cancer. Her publicist Leslie Sloane confirmed the news in a statement to PEOPLE on July 14, revealing that Doherty lost her fight with the disease on July 13.
Sloane continued by saying that the cherished daughter, sister, aunt, and friend was in the company of her loved ones and her dog, Bowie. The family is requesting privacy to mourn in peace.
In 2015, Doherty was found to have breast cancer. After receiving treatment, she went into remission by 2017. However, in 2020, she revealed that the cancer had come back as Stage 4.
“It seems like anyone in Stage 4 experiences this situation, where others want to disregard or ignore you,” she explained to Elle magazine in the same year.
“I am not prepared to retire yet. I still have a lot of energy and vitality.”
She announced in June 2023 that the cancer had reached her brain, sharing on Instagram that a CAT scan in January indicated the presence of metastasis in her brain.
She said to her fans that her fear is clearly visible.
Her cancer had metastasized to her bones by November.

Hollywood stardom
Doherty entered the Hollywood scene as a young actor on the television show Little House on the Prairie.
Despite only being featured in four episodes of the show’s last season, Doherty’s career continued to advance.
She was featured in the animated movie The Secret of NIMH and in an installment of the television show Airwolf.
In 1985, she played the role of Maggie Malene in the teen film Girls Just Want to Have Fun, alongside Helen Hunt and Sarah Jessica Parker.
In 1990, she rose to fame with her role as Brenda Walsh in the television show Beverly Hills, 90210.
She was nominated for Best Young Actress in a TV series at the Youth in Film Awards.
After leaving the show, Doherty went on to act in a number of TV movies such as Mallrats, Christmas Caper, and the popular series Charmed.
